  1. Guinea was part of an ancient west African empire and from 1849
  2. to 1898 was under French control.  Under Sekou Toure, Guinea
  3. became fully independent in 1958.  Toure turned to communist
  4. nations for help and set-up a one-party military system.  Guinea
  5. has received major investments from the Soviet Union and western
  6. companies in it prosperous bauxite mines.  The military took
  7. control of Guinea after a bloodless coup in March 1984 on the
  8. death of Toure.                    @
